We are looking for a passionate Growth Engineer that cares deeply about building excellent product experiences on our most-viewed landing pages and early onboarding experiences. You sit at the top of the product funnel, crafting the experience that helps anyone understand why our product can help them and why they should use it. You have a passion for animating in the browser, building thoughtful interactive components, and a keen eye for design. You will be working closely with our product manager, designers, engineers and product marketers to build great experiences for all of our new customers. With 5 million monthly active users and an inherently viral product, we have a unique opportunity to make data-driven product changes that will have a lasting impact.

As a Growth engineer at Whereby, you’ll be part of a tight-knit product team that deploys code several times a day. We work in cross-functional teams and design delightful user journeys in an iterative way. We aim to solve customer problems and validate our designs through user testing, limited rollouts and A/B tests. As an engineer, you'll be involved early on in the design process in order to quickly identify the best way to build something that we can test, while also keeping in mind the requirements for robustness, performance, security and scalability that a final solution needs.

Responsibilities

What will a typical week look like?

  • Building shiny new landing pages, product pages and features that attract new customers
  • Setting up A/B tests to investigate how we can accelerate our growth, improve conversion rates and make users understand the product better
  • Discussing how new features and experiments can be built, together with our designers, product managers, user researcher and other engineers.
  • You are interested in how end-users use our product, and make suggestions for how we can constantly improve the user experience.
  • Sharing what you’re doing and any problems you’re having in the daily team standup
  • Writing easy-to-read and performant code in Javascript, using our shared components
  • Contribute to breaking all assignments into smaller tasks that can realistically fit in a two-week sprint
  • Taking part in demos and showing off work you are proud of
  • Working with GitHub and Amazon AWS infrastructure to deploy things as soon as they’re ready (or a little bit before)
  • Getting your colleagues to review your code before it is merged, and helping them with reviewing theirs. You give constructive feedback and suggestions for how to improve code quality, security and scalability.
  • You contribute to planning how a problem or task can be best solved, and work independently and efficiently on implementing the parts you are responsible for.
  • Writing tests and making your code readable to others in case you get eaten by a yeti

Qualifications

What experience and skills are we looking for?

  • 3+ years of experience with frontend or fullstack software development
  • Extensive knowledge of JavaScript frontend (backend is a plus too) development (we use React and Node.js)
  • Passion for user experience, design, data
  • Able to develop code in a disciplined manner with proper documentation and structure.
  • Able to communicate efficiently and do development in collaboration with others
  • Strong ability to be self-driven and take responsibility for seeing your tasks through to release
  • Preferably academic background in computer science (BSc or MSc)

Additional experience that would be a plus:

  • Design experience
  • Experience with conversion optimization

Whereby is made by a team of ca. 50 passionate people spread across 17 locations in the small, independent Norwegian company Video Communication Service AS and parent company Videonor AS. The journey started in 2013 when the service was called appear.in, and in 2019 we went through a big rebranding process to become Whereby.
